Coffee. It is the lifeblood of the university student. Especially the university student that has escaped from his studies. Like a certain human. Corbin had braved the light drizzle to drive down to Starbucks. The problem was, once he was away from his books, he really, really didn’t want to go back to them. He had an exam coming up in the next few days, and though he felt ready, there was always something to review. But it was hard to study at home. Between his nephew, Shawn, running around like a maniac, and his brother Zach trying to lure him away with promises of Xbox 360 games, it was near impossible to keep his mind on his work. So, he’d escaped, with the notion that coffee would make him focus.
Wrong.
Now he had his mocha in hand, sitting in the window of the coffee shop, just happy for the warmth, his mind was far from his schoolwork. He could claim car trouble. He could try to argue a million different excuses as to why he should be done studying for the day. The problem was, he could argue both sides, and the mature, responsible side of him would always, always tell him to get his butt back home and study. Why couldn’t he be more like his brother, Zach? Carefree and irresponsible. Oh, right. Because someone had to be responsible in the family.
Still, he had a little time on his hands. So, he stood up and left the coffee shop. The weather, for Forks, anyway, was actually pretty nice. Cloudy, with a very light drizzle. He didn’t even bother to pull up the hood of his black raincoat, letting the rain wet down his dark hair. He crossed the road, leaving his dark green Mazda 3 alone in favour of sitting at the park. He could sit, enjoy his coffee, and pretend that there wasn’t a huge stack of textbooks to read though. Skim. Whatever. He wouldn’t let himself get distracted. Really.

Aspen glanced out at the gloomy grey sky that loomed constantly over the small of Forks. Perfect weather for her, yet the rain was some what...dull. "Ew...my hair's going to get ruined..." she sighed, reaching for her pristine white coat and pulling it on over her dark navy t-shirt. Even though she didn't feel the cold anymore, she still needed to make it look like she did, to make her seem somewhat human, even though she was as far away from being human as was possible.
She glanced at her BlackBerry, her whole family had chosen to go hunting, something she chose to avoid in the rain, considering how muddy they got usually, it only got worse in the rain. No one had tried to contact her so she figured it was alright to make a dash into the small towns centre to see who was about. Jumping into her Mini Sport, Aspen drove down the winding road back into Forks, passing the Cullens house as she did. Sniffing the air, she could tell who was there and who wasn't, but it seemed quiet there for once, surprising. Probably out hunting too.
Pulling up outside the small coffee shop, Aspen stepped into the light drizzle. Wanting to avoid frizzy hair, Aspen made a dash for the edge of the coffee shop, a little shelter, perfect.

It’s easy to forget that you have responsibilities when you have coffee. It sort of makes the world stop. At least in Corbin’s mind, it does. It was easy to forget about the textbooks, the case studies, the subject of the exam he was mean to be studying for. Really, it was too easy. But he was happy. He had his hot coffee, and he was out of the house. Two good things, in his mind. They were all used to the rain by now, but some days, it felt like pulling teeth when they were cooped up in the house.
His plan had honestly been to grab the coffee and head home. But this little break, this little bit of freedom was so nice. Even if it was wet outside. The best laid plans of mice and men... no, he was a law major, not literature. In any case, it wasn’t like he was specifically looking for a distraction when he saw her.
Well, technically, he saw the car first. And, like most men, he was appreciative of a fine car. Of course, then he saw the driver. Jaw hitting floor in 0.002 seconds. That wasn’t fair. When he was her age, he’d been happy to drive his parent’s car. Oh, wait, maybe that was it. He wasn’t vain, but he really was proud of his second hand Mazda. It was reliable, whether or not it was considered “pretty” was another matter entirely. But she had his attention. Rather than actually follow through and sit on the bench, Corbin turned right around and headed back across the street. A sheepish smile was on his face as he approached her. “Hi,” he said in his best ‘I’m not a stalker, I’m just friendly’ way. “I just wanted to say that you have a nice car.” And now he was looking at Aspen. God, she was prettier close up. A little young, maybe, but gorgeous all the same. He tried to figure out if he knew her, if he’d seen her around town. Maybe. “Um, sorry. That was kind of rude. Uh, I’m Corbin.” He held out his hand for her, hoping it wouldn’t be too cold for her to grasp.

Aspen wasn't really paying much attention to any of the people around her, to be honest most humans were boring, at least in her eyes they were. At school she didn't make much of an effort talking to them...they just stared at her anyway, like she was a freak. Though, she didn't act much differently to any of them, but then she was different...just no one actually knew it. Gliding across the parking lot swiftly to the shelter she pressed the button on her keys, locking the Mini automatically. She loved that car, it went fast and was...in her eyes...pretty.
Wrinkling her nose she caught the scent of a human behind her, of course the smell was slightly inhanced by the wet rain...but he smelled good to her. Better then most humans around here...but usually she was somewhat descensetized from the smell of human blood, so the sudden fragrence surprised her.
Turning around, Aspen smiled back, the guy looked slightly nervous...bless him. "Oh...thank you, it cost me quite a bit so I'm glad someone other then myself appreciates a good car when they see one." Smiling in reply her golden eyes glanced him over carefully once, taking in as much as she could. He was quite good look, for a human, of course their kind was much more desirable...though no one had managed to catch her attention quite the way Corbin had...their smell was never right. "Oh thats quite alright, I'm Aspen," she replied, laughing softly and holding out her hand.

As a human within the limits of Forks, Corbin was one of the many that were under the impression that vampires were a myth. Oh, he’d heard of the Cullens, and of the Kilgours. Rumours were abound about them. As his sister was a common target of gossip, Corbin tended to ignore it. So what if the new families in town were strange? He didn’t care. His own family had only been here for a few years now. Anyone considered an “outsider” seemed to be the subject of scrutiny. It annoyed him to no end. Why couldn’t they all just get along? The world would be a much happier place. Oh, except he’d be out of a job. If everyone got along, there would be no point in lawyers. Darn.
Corbin hadn’t meant to surprise the girl, but her smile seemed to put him at ease. As much as he could be, anyway. Because his conscience is still telling him that he should go home and study. But this girl, she was pretty. And pretty girls were a good distraction. He arched an eyebrow at the mention of cost. So it really did belong to her. He chucked softly and ran his hand through his black hair. “It’s beautiful.” And it sure as heck beat his run of the mill Mazda. “Must be nice to have that much money to spend. Not that I’m complaining. It’s a nice thing to spend money on.” If he had his way, he’d have a Jaguar, midnight blue. Maybe one day, when he finished up with his degree, and actually started making some good money.
He noticed her once over, which made him bit his lip to stop from grinning. He’d once been told that he was “too cute” to be a lawyer, by one of the girls in his classes. He’d wanted to crawl under a rock over that. After all, what guy wanted to be told he was “cute”? As she held out her hand, he grinned and grasped it. “Nice to meet you, Aspen.” Pretty name, pretty face. Beautiful car. But he was surprised by the temperature of her hand. “Jesus, you’re freezing,” he smiled at her and untangled his fingers from hers. “D’you want a coffee, or something? Warm up?” And he thought his hands were cold.

Aspen nodded and laughed softly once, of course her 'family' were rich, they'd lived so long, they had the time to earn the money...plus Aspen had her family inheritance still flowing nicely...giving her a little more freedom. "It's okay, I might have to look at the newer model though, this one is a couple of years old now..." she sighed, shaking her head. Her family were always updating their cars, clothes and furniture with the latest styles and fashions. It was something to do with all their spare time, after all sleeping was out of the picture. "I can think of better things to spend money on though...college, a house, the bills..." she replied, trying to sound a little more human then she normally did...after all, the only people she usually ever spoke to were her family or the Cullens, so acting normal never really came up.
Aspen flinched slightly, she'd completely forgotten how off their body temperature was. She would seem ice cold to him. "Sorry...erm..." she stuttered slightly trying to right the wrong that had just happened. "Coffee sounds...good?" she replied, knowing how awful coffee smelled to her, it wasn't right...how did humans drink this stuff. Aspen smiled politely, she'd have to drink it, humans did that. Eugh, coughing it back up later wont be pretty... she thought to herself, rubbing her hands together in a pretence to warm them up. "After you..." she said, inclining her head towards the door.

Wow. Corbin had once heard that the Kilgours were pretty loaded. Now he was seeing it with his own eyes. Not that he was jealous or anything. He would rather have his family than the money. Just having enough to go to university and run his car on his own, that was good enough for him. For now, anyway. His eyes widened slightly. A girl who knew cars. “The new model, really?” He chucked softly. “Do princesses grow tired of their toys that quickly?” He wasn’t trying to be mean, or even sarcastic. His tone was light, but he knew some girls took offense easily. “Kidding,” he added, trying to cover his bases. The last thing he wanted was to have to go home with his tail between his legs. Ah, but maybe she wasn’t really a princess. Bills, that sort of stuff. He chuckled and raked his fingers through his damp hair. “Trust me, college bites the big one. I don’t know where my money goes.” Tuition was expensive. He’d have to take up a summer job again to cover his next semester.
At Aspen’s flinch, Corbin felt bad. Poor thing, must be freezing worse than he thought, if his hands gave her a little jolt. But his smile quickly returned when she agreed to join him for coffee. Just as well. He’d finished his old one. The cold tended to make him down it in record time. He’d hated the stuff when he was younger. Now, he understood the whole phenomenon. Coffee = energy. Plus, when you dumped cream and sugar into it, it wasn’t half bad. Corbin moved to the door and opened it, holding it while he made a little gesture with his hand. “Ladies first.” Oh man. Zach would never believe him that he had coffee with this girl. No way.

Aspen raised one eyebrow delicately at Corbin, he looked pretty astonished that she knew what she was talking about. Or maybe it was just the fact her and her 'family' had an equal amount of money to the Cullens, both families were pretty rich...and in this small town it wasn't something that had managed to stay quiet for too long. "Well this one is starting to get a little slow...probably my fault...I abuse it much more then I should," she laughed, recalling the speed she'd been going on the way down into the small town. It would frighten any mere human to be in the car with any of her family, the Cullen's were just the same.
Fast cars were of course an indulgence. "You could say that...my brothers are just as bad though," Aspen smiled. Brent and Tye, her real and aquired brothers. Brent had been her brother since the human life, and Tye had changed his name to fit in with the family. "My parents are going to pay for college, I'm thinking Dartmouth..." she wasn't trying to come across as spoiled, but she couldn't exactly lie either.
Aspen rolled her eyes to look at the grey sky, wondering if she could stop the rain in its tracks...it was beginning to annoy her. Biting her lip she looked back at Corbin, she wasn't in a place to risk it. She had learnt how to stop rain before it fell, but stopping it during a downpour could be dangerous, she could over do it, pulling out the sun and well...that wouldn't go down too well. "Oh thanks..." she smiled, pushing open the door and making her way to the counter. "A small mocha please," she asked the waitress politely before taking a seat at one of the tables near the window, looking up at Corbin and wondering exactly what it was that was making her stay...to drink...eugh coffee.

To Corbin, who was raised with a mother that barely drove, let alone knew the different makes of cars, and his sister, who could vaguely identify different brands, is used to the fact that girls just don’t know cars. So for Aspen to not only be appreciative of the fact that her car was costly, but that it was already outmoded, well. It was a new one. “Slow? I thought those were built for speed.” Okay, not only did she know cars, she abused them. This was definitely more interesting than sitting in the park avoiding schoolwork. “You don’t look rebellious enough to warrant speeding.” Oh, like that was a good defence. It would never hold up in court.
Ah, she had siblings too. He rolled his eyes. “My little brother likes to abuse my car. He nearly hit a fence with it once. That was the end of that.” Now, Zach was doomed to walk wherever he needed to go, or beg for a ride. Which was miles more entertaining than hearing the story about how the fence had “jumped right out in front of him.” “You’re lucky. My parents have three kids to worry about. Well, two, I guess. I work every summer to pay for my own education.” He didn’t think it was fair that his parents would have to pay for something only he would use.
Corbin smiled as Aspen entered the coffee store, and he followed her in. He wanted to pay for her, like a good, well mannered boy, but she was a little too fast for him. Damn. So, he ended up fumbling in his pocket like an idiot for his change. “Uh, can I get a large mocha?” It seemed that the lady behind the counter recognized him, and arched an eyebrow. Yeah, he was in here again. What was the big deal? Once he had his drink, he settled opposite Aspen and wrapped his hands around his cup. “So. You’re... one of the Kilgours, aren’t you?”

Aspen laughed an shook her head, of course her car was built for speed, there would have been no point in buying it if it wasn't. Ridiculous as it may sound, unless the vehicle was fast, no one in her family was interested...at all. "It was built for speed, but I have a small tendancey of going fast without realizing...you wouldn't want to get in a car with me thats for sure..." she smiled, 80mph was slow for her... Aspen shrugged and wrinkled her nose, being what she was meant she could get away with most things..."I haven't even gotten a speeding ticket...nor been in a crash..." she admitted, knowing it would impress but for all the wrong reasons. Not only that...it would raise suspicion.
"I wish thats all Brent did to his...it was a Christmas gift and he took it down to an off-roading range. I'll never forgive him for that...he owes me a new car...so I'll make him get my next one," she laughed, knowing how weird that would sound...not that she cared, so many kids made assumptions about them. "Only three kids to worry about...you're lucky you only have two siblings...I have my two brothers Brent and Tye, then theres my aunts two adopted daughters, Alayna and Ivy..." she frowned, it was a struggle sometimes, not all of them got along all the time. Her and Brent were okay, twins were like that.
Watching Corbin take a seat in front of her, Aspen sipped her coffee...ugh it tasted all wrong and she knew her brother would rip it out of her later for drinking the stuff. "Erm...I'm an Averill, my aunt married James and when my parents died they took myself and my two brothers in...I love them as much as I would my real parents though...and the girls aren't too bad." she smiled, "I'm boring you, sorry..." tucking her hands into her jacket she kept her cold skin away from his reach...that was one slip up she wouldn't let happen again.

Aspen’s laugh was so pretty. Like bells, and highly distracting. Of course, so was her voice. What happened to ‘no distractions’, I’ll never know. But she intrigued him. Fast cars, looks, money, who wouldn’t be intrigued? But that wasn’t why he was talking to her. Aspen had drawn him, like a clueless moth to a brilliant flame. “It’s sure prettier than my piece of junk.” He chuckled at the speed comment. “I’ll have to remember that, next time I’m looking for a heart attack.” Of course, he was kidding. And wow, no speeding tickets? Corbin hadn’t ever gotten one, but that was because he happened to like rules. Studying law gave you a new, and healthy respect for society’s rules. “I haven’t either, but that’s more because I don’t want to risk it.” He could probably talk his way out of a ticket, but he didn’t want to try it.
Corbin’s eyes widened at Aspen’s flippant description of someone he could only assume was one of her siblings. He knew that her family had a few kids. “Man, why would he wreck a perfectly good car? Especially a gift.” Yeah, okay, so it was a little weird, her talking like that. But then again, they were all raised differently. So they were just a little better off than most of the residents of Forks. The Cullens were the same. That didn’t make them bad people. Corbin listened intently to her family dynamics, intent on learning all he could. “I don’t know about that. I mean, me and my siblings are all pretty much grown up. Well, Zach, my younger brother... well, sometimes I’m not too sure about him. But we also have my nephew, Shawn. He’s’ a handful.” He certainly made for a bigger distraction than Aspen. He caught the small frown. “You don’t like the other girls?” He was good at reading people.
Grateful for the warmth, Corbin drank his coffee with a blissful expression. Warm drinks were a lifeline in Forks. Especially when it was drizzling. He was interested in her family. So many just made assumptions. But he was happier hearing about them firsthand. “Sounds complex. And it’s not boring. Honestly. My family isn’t that exciting. Mom, Dad, then my brother Zach, he’s a year younger than me, and then my sister, Midori, who’s three years younger. And then my nephew, Shawn. He’s three.” He shrugged and sipped at his drink. Everyone had families, simple or complex. As for Aspen, he’d heard “spoiled brat” tossed around in relation to her family. But he wasn’t getting that vibe at all.
